桧皮葺の屋根｜自然とともに在るかたち

この屋根材は、伊弉諾神宮の本殿に用いられていたものです。

桧皮葺は、桧の皮を重ねてつくられる日本古来の屋根の工法の一つです。

立ったままの桧から皮をいただくこともあり、時間をかけて再び皮をまとい、また次へと巡っていきます。

いただき、還り、また巡る。

この屋根もまた、およそ三十年の時を経てこの場所へと移ってきました。

その表面には、神域にあったことを示す菊の紋が刻まれています。

This piece of roofing was once part of the main hall of Izanagi Jingu Shrine.

Hiwadabuki is a traditional Japanese method of layering thin cypress bark to form a roof.

In some cases, the bark is carefully taken from living cypress trees, which over time grow new layers again.

Taken, returned, and continuing in a cycle.

After about thirty years, this roof completed its role and has come to rest here. You can also see a chrysanthemum crest on its surface—a quiet mark of its place within a sacred space.
