狛犬｜場を守る存在

狛犬は、古くから神社の入口に置かれ、場を護る存在として親しまれてきました。
口を開いた「阿」と口を閉じた「吽」は、はじまりと終わりを表し、邪気を祓い、清らかな空気をもたらすといわれています。
この狛犬は、淡路島の伝統産業である瓦を用い、古淡のために一からデザインしたものです。
この土地の素材とともに、この場を静かに護っています。
Komainu are traditional guardian figures commonly placed at the entrances of Shinto shrines in Japan.
They are believed to protect sacred spaces and keep away negative influences.
One figure has its mouth open (“A”), and the other closed (“Un”), representing the beginning and the end—a symbol of the complete cycle of existence.
The pair is said to purify the space and create a sense of balance.
The komainu here were specially designed for KOTAN, using Awaji Island’s traditional kawara roof tiles. Rooted in the materials and spirit of this land, they quietly stand at the entrance, watching over the space。
